To the People of God on the Death of
Pope John Paul

Shocking isn't it, this business, `death'? It has no respect. You'd think a Pope would be safe. But no. Snatched just like that. How could it happen?

Death has no respect; that's how it happened. Taken from us while we were sleeping, no less. We didn't even suspect; we had no time to prepare ourselves. I don't like that. I'm angry, confused, shocked...and I'm scared. If death could not respect one so known and entrusted, how can I ask it to revere me and my life of simple regard?

Oh, we are not safe, none of us, from this intrusion upon our lives. Fame, fortune, investment, duty, concern, love...nothing can sway it, stop it. "Do not be afraid" says our Christ. How, how shall we not be afraid when this sort of thing can happen?

"It was death, not God, that had reason. Your ways are not mine. These `ways' may claim you, but I, your God, will snatch you back, for you are mine. Lost to the world but found forever to me. Rise up my people of faith and shout "I Believe!" Then once more be at peace knowing I, your God, am with you still."
